Assessments

During the semester professors have the opportunity to assess and grade the level of students understanding of the material that is presented in the class. Professors do this through homeworks, quizzes, exams and in-class communication with the students. Therefore the grade given to a student by the professor mainly is the institution's assessment of the students accomplishments.

It is appropriate that the students also have the opportunity to assess their own level of understanding of the material presented throughout the semester. This opportunity is provided to the students through the pre-completion and post-completion course assessments.

The Pre- and Post-completion questions are identical. Each question is related to a particular topic that is covered during the semester. Each question simply asks students to evaluate their understanding of the topic with a grade between 1 (very low) and 5 (very high). Difference between the pre- and the post-completion grades is the students' assessment of their accomplishment during the semester.

In an ideal situation there will be a perfect correlation between these two assessments, the grade given by the professor and the difference between pre- and post-completion grades students give to themselves. The professor and the institution can evaluate these results and identify descrepencies for remediation.

The information provided in these pages is an attempt to highlight assessment by the students in concert with assessment by the professor.
